Most mothers know that breastfeeding gives their babies a healthy start that lasts a lifetime. But what if you need help? Or are worried or confused about something?
You may find what you need from friends or family, or from midwives or health visitors.
You may also choose to ring an NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor to talk over what’s happening.
Who’s the person on the other end of the phone?
NCT Breastfeeding Counsellors are all mothers who have breastfed.
They have been trained by a charity for parents, the National Childbirth Trust.
The facts about Breastfeeding Counsellors
· Breastfeeding Counsellors handle around 20,000 calls every year
· They help you work out what’s best for you
· They keep up to date by training and studying
· Your conversations with your breastfeeding counsellors are confidential.
· Breastfeeding counselling is free (except for the cost of the phone call) – training costs and expenses are met by the NCT
They’ve learned to listen carefully, understand your point of view. They don’t tell you what to do. In most breastfeeding situations they can give researched-based information. They can talk through with you what’s important to you.
The NCT breastfeeding counsellor service is run from people’s homes. Many breastfeeding counsellors also have children and go out to work, so you may not get an immediate reply to your phone call although the service is available outside normal office hours. Counsellors may be able to visit you – or invite you to them – but this is not always possible.
